Civil motions are heard on Mondays at 2:00 p.m. or as scheduled by Court Clerk upon special request of counsel. If Monday is a holiday, the next motion date is: As scheduled. It is not necessary to clerk a Monday motion date with the Court Clerk prior to filing the motion.
Criminal motions are heard on: As scheduled, Time: As scheduled.
In cases where all parties have consented to Judge Hillman for all purposes, discovery motions are to be calendared before him.
For all other cases, discovery motions are to be calendared before the District Judge or Magistrate Judge (as determined by the policy of the District Judge assigned to the case).
The title page of the Joint Stipulation must state the discovery cutoff date, the motion cutoff date, the pretrial conference date, and the trial date. In addition, a copy of the Order establishing the initial case schedule, as well as any amendments, must be attached to the Joint stipulation or to the declaration filed in support of the motion.
Tentative rulings are often, but not always, issued on discovery motions. Discovery motions may be taken under submission without oral argument. Out-of-town counsel may request a telephonic hearing on a discovery motion. Such requests will be carefully considered on a motion-by-motion basis.
Mandatory chambers copies of e-filed documents are to be delivered to chambers, 5th Floor, Roybal. Counsel must comply with General Order 08-02, IV D.
Procedures for filing an Ex Parte Application: Follow Local Rule 7-19.
To request a continuance of any scheduled hearing, counsel should contact opposing counsel, then contact the Court Clerk for direction.
To request an extension of a court-ordered filing deadline, counsel should contact opposing counsel (if possible), then contact the Court Clerk for direction.
Counsel are not allowed to contact the Judge’s law clerk or secretary.
Inquiries regarding the status of a motion, stipulation or proposed order: Counsel should check the Central District’s Pacer site. Alternatively, if necessary, counsel should contact the Court Clerk.
Calendar conflicts (procedures for attorneys to follow if they have a calendar conflict): If there is a calendar conflict, counsel should contact the Court Clerk by phone and/or e-mail as soon as the conflict is known.[

Procedures for obtaining the services of an interpreter in a civil case: Counsel are responsible for obtaining the services of an interpreter if one is needed.
Counsel must promptly schedule a settlement conference after referral to the Magistrate Judge pursuant to Local Rule 16-14.
Filing or Lodging Documents Under Seal:
No document(s) may be filed or lodged under seal absent Court Order pertinent to the specific document(s).
Proposed Protective Orders containing contrary language will be rejected.
If any party seeks to file or lodge with the Court any documents which Confidential Information (as defined in a previously entered Protective Order), such materials shall be submitted to the Court in accordance with the procedures set forth in Local Rule 79-5.1. If one party wishes to file or lodge documents under seal, the other party shall not unreasonably withhold agreement to such procedure. If an agreement is reached, the parties shall submit to the Court a Stipulation and Proposed Order for such filing or lodging under seal. If no such agreement is reached, then the proponent of lodging or filing under seal shall submit an Application and Proposed Order pursuant to Local Rule 79-5.1. |
