Effective October 1, 2005, the Court's Interpreter Services Section will no longer schedule interpreter services (interpreting and written translating) for CJA attorneys, unless the service involves the sight-translating of a presentence report. To schedule an interpreter for the reading of the presentence report, please contact Interpreter Services at least 24 hours ahead of time. In all other out-of-court service needs, CJA Panel attorneys should schedule their own interpreters. Please refer to the Court's web page www.cacd.uscourts.gov/interpreters for further details.
It is important to note that payment to CJA interpreters for out-of-court services will be made on an hourly basis, billed in hours and tenths of hours with a cap not to exceed the then current Administrative Office of the United States Courts (the "AO") full day rates. Maximum hourly rates have been established.
Interpreting
AO Certified/Professionally/California State Certified qualified interpreters may be paid up to $74.00 an hour not to exceed $384.00 per day (the current AO full day rate). California State Registered Interpreters may be paid up to $56 per hour not to exceed $305.00 per day (the current AO full day rate). Language Skilled Interpreters may be paid up to $54.00 an hour not to exceed $265.00 per day (the current AO full day rate). Non-certified and Non-Language Skilled Interpreters may be paid up to $24.00 an hour with no daily limit. Actual travel time and mileage at the current CJA rate will be compensated subject to reasonableness (ex. travel time and mileage from out-of-district to MDC to interpret is unreasonable and will not be approved).
