FEDERAL COURT TO CELEBRATE LAW DAY 2009 WITH NATIONAL THEME OF
“A LEGACY OF LIBERTY: CELEBRATING LINCOLN’S BICENTENNIAL”
This year marks the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Established in 1958 by President Eisenhower, Law Day is a national celebration of the dedication to the principles of government under the law. The legal processes that contribute to the freedoms that all Americans share. During the week of April 21 - April 24, 2009, the District Court will focus on the celebration of Lincoln as an American president who united a nation and fought for justice.
The Court anticipates that 1100 students and teachers from 16 public high schools in Los Angeles County will participate in the California Central District’s Law Day celebration. The two hour morning program will be offered 16 times during the four-day period, with a district or magistrate judge presiding at each session. The program will start with the students participating in a mock jury trial to be followed by a presentation by the host judge, and will continue with speakers from the Office of the U.S. Attorney, Federal Public Defender, U.S. Pretrial Services, U.S. Probation Office, and U.S. Marshals Service. Approximately 120 Central District employees have volunteered to assist with this event.
