Information for Applicants: 

Spring/Summer Judicial Externship Openings:

The Honorable Jesus G. Bernal, United States District Judge, Central District of California, Eastern Division at Riverside, is currently accepting applications from full-time or part-time externship candidates for spring 2014 and full-time candidates for summer 2014.  Applicants should be current or incoming second or third year law students or recent law school graduates.  Externs will research cases and statutes, analyze and summarize case files, review motions, draft memorandum opinions, cite-check orders and opinions, maintain the library, and provide related assistance as needed.

Applicants must have superior analytical and writing skills, as demonstrated by one or more of the following:

previous employment which required significant amounts of analysis and writing; completion of a thesis or dissertation; high standing in a legal research and writing course or appellate advocacy class;membership on law journal; experience which is equivalent to one of the above items, or which demonstrates superior analytical and writing skills.

Applicants should submit:

a cover letter; a resume; a writing sample; current law school transcript (unofficial transcripts accepted); and the names and telephone numbers of two (2) references with direct knowledge of your analytical and writing skills.

Applicants may apply for both spring and summer positions.  Applicants for spring 2014 should submit their materials no later than December 1, 2013.  Summer 2014 applications will be accepted until  March 1, 2014.  Positions will likely be filled well in advance of these deadlines, therefore applicants are encouraged to submit their materials early.  Materials should be sent to:
