Position Overview: 

The United States District Court, Central District of California, invites applications for the position of Law Clerk to a United States Magistrate Judge in Los Angeles.  While the law clerk's duties will include overseeing the daily operation of the Judge’s chambers, with attention to efficient organization of files and record keeping, ensuring quality control in the processing of orders, and similar administrative tasks, the vast majority of the duties will include those of a traditional “elbow” law clerk, including legal research and analysis and the drafting of legal memoranda and orders.  The successful candidate will be able to perform all duties on a seamless basis, and exhibit at all times and to all persons a courteous, professional and cooperative attitude.  The position is intended to be a two year term clerkship and the successful applicant is expected to begin on or around September 2, 2014.


Strong academic credentials from an ABA-accredited law school, as well as superior writing skills and analytical ability.  While prior experience in the areas of social security, civil rights, or habeas corpus is desirable, it is not required.  Strong computer and word processing skills are desirable.
The successful candidate must also be a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident of the United States currently seeking citizenship or intending to become a citizen upon meeting the eligibility requirements.

Compensation and Benefits: 

Compensation will be set based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate subject to the policies and guidelines set forth in the Judicial Salary Plan.  Annual salary range is approximately $64,585 - $141,406, depending on qualifications.  Term Law Clerks qualify for federal employees’ group health and life insurance benefits.
