Judge Jay C. Gandhi is a United States Magistrate Judge for the Central District of California.

Judge Gandhi is dedicated to alternative dispute resolution. He is currently a vice-chair of the Court’s ADR committee, and a former co-chair of the ADR committee of the American Bar Association’s litigation section.
Judge Gandhi has received a number of accolades, including most recently, in 2015, the Benjamin Aranda III Judge of the Year Award and, in 2014, the Judicial Excellence and Public Service Award.
Judge Gandhi is a frequent speaker and writer. Judge Gandhi regularly speaks about best practices in trial advocacy and alternative dispute resolution, including for the American Bar Association, JAMS Inc., Association of Business Trial Lawyers, California Employment Lawyers Association, among many others. Prior to his appointment, Judge Gandhi was a litigation partner at Paul Hastings LLP, a leading global law firm. Judge Gandhi practiced law for nearly 12 years at Paul Hastings. He specialized in complex business litigation and class actions, and practiced in a variety of state and federal jurisdictions. He represented both plaintiffs and defendants, and his practice areas included securities and finance, real estate, intellectual property, employment, professional negligence and general commercial litigation. During his tenure at Paul Hastings, Judge Gandhi also served as an office vice-chair and a chair of associate development.
Judge Gandhi is also an alumnus of the trial attorney partnership with the Orange County District Attorney’s office where he worked on a full-time basis as a volunteer deputy district attorney.
Judge Gandhi is on the board of directors of the Federal Bar Association and on the judicial advisory board of the Constitutional Rights Foundation.
Prior to joining Paul Hastings, Judge Gandhi was a law clerk to U.S. District Judge Kenneth M. Hoyt. Judge Gandhi graduated Order of the Coif from the University of Southern California Law School.
