Judge Roberts, who was sworn in on November 10, 2025, will preside over matters in Los Angeles in the Court’s Western Division. Judge Roberts succeeds former Magistrate Judge Gail Standish.
Before his appointment as a magistrate judge, Judge Roberts was the managing partner at Cole Huber LLP’s Southern California office. In that role, Judge Roberts was a litigator focusing primarily on representing cities, counties, and special districts on a variety of matters, including civil rights defense, government tort defense, and land use litigation. Prior to joining Cole Huber LLP in 2013, Judge Roberts was a partner and associate at Best Best & Krieger LLP, where his practice focused on municipal law and litigation. Judge Roberts was selected to the Southern California Super Lawyers list from 2019 through 2025 and has served as a board member and officer of the Inland Empire Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.
Prior to entering private practice in 2000, Judge Roberts served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Virginia A. Phillips of the United States District Judge for the Central District of California.
Judge Roberts obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and American Studies, magna cum laude, from the University of Southern California in 1996, and his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Southern California Gould School of Law in 1999, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and served as Senior Editor of the Southern California Interdisciplinary Law Journal. Judge Roberts was also a student supervisor and certified law clerk in the school’s in-house legal clinic, where he represented clients in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and various federal District Courts.
Including the position now occupied by Judge Roberts, the Central District of California has 24 full-time and one part-time magistrate judge positions. The Central District of California is comprised of the counties of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo. It serves more than 19.3 million people, nearly half the population of the State of California.
